Lord Carter’s Report Comes under the Scanner of Parliament Enquiry Committee

July 16th, 2009

The publication of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain Report came under severe criticism. It was criticized for its impractical suggestions and proposals. The report was not forthcoming on implementation scheme for the proposed services either.

Soon after the publication of the report, the parliament has announced that it will be investigating various aspects of the report. The agenda for the enquiry committee was revealed by www.parliament.uk but it was disappointing to see that the issue of upload speed had failed to find a mention.

The parliament committee will, in the course of investigation, look for ways to take maximum advantage of the current digital boom. Apart from that, the committee is all set to find whether the Digital Britain Report set the bar too low when it announced universal access to broadband that would provide users with speeds of 2Mb by 2012.

The viability of government’s proposal on the next generation access will also be looked into. The report’s proposal of raising funds for next generation access by levying taxes on subscribers is going to be investigated too. Service providers will not be breathing easy either as they will also be investigated for whether they are actually providing broadband speeds that they had promised - Click here for a broadband comparison of ISP’s.

The committee may be covering a lot of aspects but the wait is going to be quite long as the investigation is scheduled to begin in earnest only by the end of September.
