A Moving Checklist to Survive Moving Hell
February 28th, 2009I don’t think there is ever anyone who actually enjoys moving. Sure, they may enjoy the thought of actually moving into a bigger or better home, a new city, or a new neighborhood. But, the actual, physical effort of moving, I don’t think anyone ever enjoys. Papers are lost, money is misplaced, momentos are damaged, these are all the negative things we associate with moving.
Thankfully, the people at Citimove, an online mover marketplace where movers bid on your job, have put together a helpful moving checklist for before and after you’ve moved. I suggest you check out the tips below and then, on the day of the move, print and carry it around as a reference. Moving tips may seem obvious but are often easily overlooked, so take their moving advice and utilize this checklist when it’s time for your next move.
- Carry around a scratch pad to take notes. A blank scratchpad let’s you jot down all those things that come flying your way during the course of a move. Stuff like phone numbers, emails, shipment registration numbers are all little things that you should put on your scratchpad, all in one place for your easy review.
- Segregate the essentials. Stuff like towels and sheets should be put into designated boxes and clearly marked so you don’t have to rummage through boxes for these essentials on your first night in your new home.
- Clean out the fridge. OK, time to get rid of the science experiments hiding in the back of the fridge. Don’t wait to clear out your old fridge on the day of the move as odors may take several hours or even a day to dissipate. Put in a clean box of baking soda as a favor for the people who will be moving into your old place.
- Take the phone book if you are moving out of town. You may need to access some old numbers from it in your new town.
- Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes.
- Before the movers leave the old home, be sure there is a way for them to reach you at the new place. Ideally, they should have your cell phone number handy and you should have their’s.
- Keep precious and sentimental items with you personally. Don’t trust that these won’t be lost along the move. Pictures of happy memories past, especially, cannot be replaced.
- Pack plates and books vertically rather than laying them flat. This protects them better and prevents the breaking or cracking.
- Tag your items with numbers and stickers. Use different colored stickers for different rooms in your new home and number your boxes so you know you have a complete inventory at the new place.
- Hold a garage sale before the move to get rid of old items you don’t want to keep but that still may have value for sale.
Follow these tips and I’m sure you’ll have a much less stressful move.
