Overcoming Differences in a Relationship

December 31st, 2008

Everyone has heard the old adage “opposites attract.” In love and marriage, when opposites attract, the results are often both beautiful and tumultuous. Opposite personalities can contribute to the chemistry in a love relationship, but if a couple in a love relationship are too different, they might end up heading in different directions. How many shared similarities are necessary for successful love and marriage?

In a comprehensive study, researchers at the University of Iowa found that people tend to love and marry those who are similar in attitudes, religion and values. The results of the study appeared in the February issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA). According to authors Luo and Klohnen:

“However, once people are in a committed relationship, it is primarily personality similarity that influences marital happiness because being in a committed relationship entails regular interaction and requires extensive coordination in dealing with tasks, issues and problems of daily living. Whereas personality similarity is likely to facilitate this process, personality differences may result in more friction and conflict in daily life.” “…As far as attitudes are concerned, people who chose to marry each other should be well aware of how similar or different they are on these domains because attitudes are very visible and salient. This suggests that attitudinal and value differences, when they exist, are part of a conscious decision to stay together on the basis of other important considerations.”

The study suggests that once in a committed love relationship, similarities in personality become more important for a happy marriage. It is important to determine which characteristics and values are important to you and also in a love and marriage partner.

It is undeniably true: some things we can overlook in our love relationship while some things are not to be tolerated. While similarities are critical to successful love and marriage, opposites do indeed attract.

Some will argue, tirelessly, the point that successful love and marriage also depends on how different you and your partner are. Contrasting personalities, opposing cultures and ideas can benefit and nurture a love relationship or marriage by introducing each person to a whole new perspective. Ideally, our partner in love and marriage inspires and expands our world as we knew it before we met our partner.

Opposing personalities can and do also clash in love and marriage. Keep in mind, if you are not willing to change, then do not assume that you can change your partner.

Different points of view, even unfamiliar or uncomfortable ones, can encourage a whole new frame to your love relationship, and there’s nothing wrong with adding another dimension to your life and your love and marriage.

No matter how many similarities or differences exist in your relationship, compromise is the key to keeping your love and marriage vital. Any opposing realities must be confronted, or they could end up becoming emotionally expensive. A couple must learn how to communicate each other’s needs and make sacrifices.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Requesting Links

December 31st, 2008

Do’s

Concentrate your efforts on getting relevant high quality links. The more popular the site, the better rated it is (for example the higher the Google PR), the more valuable the link from it is. A good rule of thumb is that each increase in PR is an increase in magnitude of value.

People are more likely to link with you if you already have a link to them. So if you’re going to ask for a reciprocal link, first create your links before you send out any of your link request emails.

Keep the links focused to your topic, or to items your visitors will be interested in. Don’t just randomly link to other websites, you’re your visitors and the search engines will both devalue you if you do.

The more PR you have, the easier it is to get links. I know this is a catch-22, but it’s the truth. So don’t expect much at first. Aim more for sites that have lower PR’s and work your way up. Don’t expect a website with a PR of 7-8 to link with a site of a PR2-3. Odds are it just won’t happen.

Probably the #1 do, have good, unique, and relevant content that’s interesting! If you don’t chances are you won’t get many links. Getting links to interesting sites is a whole lot easier than to boring “spammy” sites.

When you request a link be personable, be specific about what attracted you to that site, explain why you’d be a good linking partner, etc. In the past, I’ve found that I’ve gotten great results when I commented on a particular text from another website that got my attention. I’d spend a few sentences explaining why I found it interesting, and relate it to something on my website. It’s very effective, people like when you notice them, and you’re genuine. Do note that if you’re faking it or if you’re sending a template letter, it will produce the opposite effect.

Keep your link requests brief. People are busy and don’t want to read long emails. If you send me more than one or two paragraphs, you’ve lost my attention. So if you’re going to comment as I just suggested on the previous Do, keep it short and sweet.

Peak the persons interest. If you send someone an email with just “reciprocal link request”, or something common like that, it will probably just be put on top of a pile of other link requests to get to when time permits. However if you draw the person’s attention by talking about something specific, like a topic they recently wrote about, or some exciting news related to their topic, chances are much higher that you’ll connect with them and get linked.

Don’t be shy about putting links to other sites in your articles. I know I regularly look through my web logs to see where the traffic is coming from. Who knows who might find you? I can tell you from experience it’s worked for me.

Have your links page close to your home page. Don’t embed it somewhere where no one can find it. I’ve seen this done often with the precept that it’ll increase your PR by not giving it away (for lack of better term). Maybe it’s true, maybe not. In either case, I personally won’t reciprocate with you if all you’re offering is the 300th link on page 10 of your links page that is 10 clicks deep.

Don’ts

Don’t participate in link farms and exchange programs. Most are completely irrelevant to your website and the search engines already know about them. If you’re unlucky enough, you might even get your website banned from some search engines as a result.

Don’t use redirects or link tricks when you offer link exchanges. Most people see through these and they quickly backfire.

Don’t make your link pages look like just a large lists of web pages. No one values these links. They generate no traffic or PR for the websites listed. Rather spend the time to create a valuable links page with name, description, and some comments. It shows that you took the time to evaluate them and you really are interested.

Very important, don’t send duplicate link request emails. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen multiple requests within minutes from the same website. I won’t go into the debate of whether or not automating link requests is good, but if you do automate it, don’t make it so blatantly obvious.

Don’t CC lots of people in your link request emails. This is even worse than sending multiple copies of the same request to the same website.

I understand that this is a catch-22 again, but I get many requests from people who have been blogging for 1-2 weeks, maybe 3-4. In any case, if you’re the new kid on the block, don’t expect links from larger sites right away. How do I know you’ll be around in another month or so? Give yourself some time to build your reputation up, and then ask for higher quality links. Like I mentioned before, start smaller and build up.

Don’t send emails with “warnings” that I’m in danger of losing my link from you. Firstly, they won’t work, secondly they tell me you’ve automated the process and I’m one of lots, and lastly, odds are that your links are worthless because of their sheer quantity. Never mind that more often than not they have no relevance to my website.

When asking for links keep your link description brief and to the point. Don’t try to seed your link requests with as many keywords as you can possibly squeeze into it. I can’t tell you many times I’ve seen linking titles that make no sense, that seem to be a dozen or more keywords randomly slapped together.

Don’t capitalize your link title and/or description. The harder you make it for someone to incorporate your links, the less likely they’re going to link to you.

Don’t try to ask for reciprocal links by falsely saying how much traffic your site gets. It’s usually pretty obvious, and if not it will be obvious within no time at all. No one likes to link to dishonest people.

All in all these are my tips. Like I said before, I’ve been on both sides of the fence and these are the simple Do’s and Don’ts that really helped me.

Choosing Your Wedding Dress

December 31st, 2008

He’s proposed and it is time to make a decision on the most important detail of every little girl’s dream: the wedding dress. Should it be sleeveless, short, long, lacey, sequined or plain? So many questions to ask yourself, although you are sure of one thing, it needs to be perfect.

As soon as the planning begins for the big day, choosing your wedding dress becomes somewhat of an urgency for most brides, who do not want to wait until the last minute. While dealing with wedding stress and preparations, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to try on different styles and find the one who says “you”.

The theme of your wedding will be an important point when selecting that special dress. Are you getting married on the beach? If so, you might choose a light airy style. Have you decided on a formal affair? Then by all means, go all out and wear a white dress covered in silk and lace. Whatever type of occasion your wedding will be, your dress will play one of the most important roles in it!

It’s also important to think about the month and season you are getting married in. If you are having a middle of summer wedding, then you probably shouldn’t wear a wedding dress with double layers or long sleeves. After all, this is supposed to be the most memorable day of your beginning together. You don’t want the biggest memory to be how much you perspired throughout the ceremony!

When choosing a wedding dress, try on comfortable styles. Walk around in them, if kneeling is part of your ceremony, then kneel in the dress and be sure you are not going to be uncomfortable in your choice. The beauty of the dress is only half of your decisionthe other half is looking beautiful, happy and elegant. You cannot look happy if you are holding your breath so seams do not pop or you’re itchy from the lace on your arms.

One mistake that a lot of brides tend to make when choosing a wedding dress is with the size. If you are planning on losing weight before your big day, do not buy a dress the size you think you may be come the wedding day. Instead buy the size you are on the day you choose the dress. It will always be easier to take a dress in if it is too big, than to add material for a dress that ended up being too small.

With the expense of weddings, some couples try and cut back by making their own flowers, having a family member bake the wedding cake or hiring a friend to take wedding photos. Although it is okay to cut back and still have your dream wedding, don’t skimp when choosing your wedding dress. If you cannot afford to hit a wedding boutique and pay their prices, try wedding consignment shops, who offer ‘like new’ dresses at an affordable price.

Whatever style, color or price range you decide on when choosing your wedding dress, remember that you are still “You” and that is who your fianc© fell in love with, not your dress, which will only add to the ambiance of your day.

After you have chosen your wedding dress hang it in the bag it comes in and do not over show it. Give guests something to look forward to as they see you for the first time walking down the aisle. And unless it is unavoidable, do not let your future husband see your dress at all before the wedding. It’s bad luck!

Selecting Bridal Jewelry to suit your gown and veil

December 29th, 2008

In addition to choosing a stunning dress, you will also want to find some nice accents to go along with it. In many cases, this would be jewelry and a veil, but can include many other accoutrements.

The jewels

For each particular style of wedding gown, you need to choose particular styles of jewelry. And since you can’t wear your gown into jewelry stores, you will want to wear a shirt with the same color as your dress as well as the same neckline. This is the best way to capture the right look.

Starting with the earrings, you can look to your hair style to determine how to dress them up. If you have a shorter style or you’re looking to pull your hair up for the wedding day, you will want to pick longer earrings that extend towards your neck. If you want something simpler, then diamond or rhinestone studs can be equally beautiful.

The neck is the focal point for most brides, so you can really dazzle them here. Look at your dress to see if you have a lot of detail or not. If you do, you will want to choose a necklace that’s a little less extravagant. If you don’t follow this advice, you will have multiple looks competing with one another and it can create a very confused and scattered look.

For a simple dress with a deep neckline, you should be looking at larger pendants or a more complicated style. Pearls always seem to work, but try on different lengths to make sure that they complement the entire look.

Here comes the veil

While many modern brides are opting to not have a veil, they still remain a mainstay for wedding attire. Veils today can come with rhinestones and tiaras built in and can make a dramatic statement as the bride enters the church.

What you want to keep in mind though is that the more complicated the veil, the less you want to do for your jewelry. It’s another case of the competing looks and balancing the overall effect of the details. You don’t want to have so many things going on that people forget to look at your face.

The best advice is to find one feature or one accessory that you love and make that the most complicated thing that you wear. Whether it’s a tiara or lovely diamond earrings, choose only one. Your pictures will thank you.

Love - Is Your Partner Your Soul Mate?

December 27th, 2008

To be in love is a divine feeling. To love and get love in return is for few lucky souls. If you are one who has found love that is great. Is your partner your soul mate? Your love will one day wither away. The days of bliss that you are enjoying will become a memory and the new realities of future may prove to be not very attractive. But if you are soul mates, you both will be able to enjoy life together for a much longer time.

Before we discuss about what is a mate and what is a soul mate, let me ask you one simple question. Do you have a passion in life- anything that you love doing and enjoy? If yes, does your love partner share that interest? What if he/she does not? Let us talk about that.

After sometime the physical attraction will reduce. The romantic feelings will get battered with time, but your passion for what you enjoy doing will not reduce. If your partner shares the same passion, you will enjoy doing that together, otherwise, you will look for mates with whom you can share your passion and slowly drift away from your partner.

This is not uncommon. Look at most of the wealthy people. Their main passion is to make money and become more powerful. The process of making money thrills them. What of their partners? That is why you will find marriages getting broken rapidly with such groups. Before you decide on a partner, try and get one who shares your passion and who can be your soul mate in true sense. Your relationship will survive much longer.

Acquire Public Liability Insurance Cover via the Web

December 27th, 2008

With the claims culture growing all throughout the world, possessing professional indemnity cover is becoming ever more and more indispensible. If you do not at this time have professionally indemnity insurance included into your building cover, then now is the exact time to look into acquiring suitable cover. Here is some information about why you require insurance, and what to look out for. Get a public liability insurance quote online.

What is professional indemnity insurance: Professional Indemnity insurance is an insurance policy that protects you from claims that other individuals may possibly make against you in the occurrence of an accident. If somebody damages their property or wounds themselves in or around your property or business then the public liability insurance will protect you for any damages that might come about. Cover typically ranges from ?250,000 up to ?1 million.

What are you covered for: Insurance will insure you for accidents or loss that other individuals may experience in or around your residence or business grounds. You are covered from claims from criminals as well as damages that may well occur to anybody from falling items or people carrying out maintenance. If a mishap happens on your grounds & someone claims against you, your insurance policy will assist you to pay any costs.

What’s included A lot of contents or property insurance covers include in-built liability insurance. You ought to check with your insurance company whether this is the case, and if so what grade of cover you get. Even if the insurance is included, you must guarantee that you are suitably covered for any specific accidents that may well come about.

Premiums: The premiums that you are expected to have to pay depend on the type of cover you buy. If you only protect your home, then payments are extremely likely to be much lower than if you are wanting to cover a business. However, premiums are pretty cheap for the extent of protection that you get, & its as a result fundamental for any individual running a company.

Depression Cure: Tips on How to Draw from that Higher Power

December 26th, 2008

In spite of the immense technological advancements and inventions designed to make our lives easier, depression still exists and millions of people are still seeking a depression cure. With all the sources of entertainment around us, depression still lurks in the core of our very existence as humans.

Why? Could it be that with all the technology and scientific breakthroughs that we have lost the very essence of our being as humans? That-being a deep connection with the Omnipotent.

This may very well be the case. We work too hard, go at neck-breaking speeds in life to get things done and never take the time to relax and draw on the Higher Power inherent within us, it is no wonder over 25 million people in the United states are depressed and consequently seeking a depression cure to end their misery.

Coming from a Christian background and adhering to most of its principles in my honest opinion, an answer when asking for a depression cure will be a re-connection with God, by perhaps the most powerful yet easy method that although it is as old as the mountains is still extremely effective till this day: Prayer.

Don’t approach it by thinking that you have to say some specific verses or a bunch of “Thee’s and ‘Thou’s’”. That’s not necessary, talk to your Creator as you would your best friend and let it all out.

The next step will be to simply take the time out to relax.

I’m going to borrow from Yoga folks, and the pose here is the relaxation pose.
It involves laying flat on a bed, and consciously breathing deeply and evenly in a ratio of 5:5:5 (inhalation, retention and exhalation). You may do this accompanying a clock or a metronome. Breathe evenly as thus for several minutes, now consciously make auto-suggestions to your body starting from the toes to relax by saying mentally: “my toes are hereby relaxed, my feet are hereby relaxed etc…”

Do this working to the crown of your head and make sure every organ you can think of is relaxed by this auto-suggestion. Now the best part, pick one of the following quotes depending on your spiritual beliefs and repeat this to yourself…(or heck, pick them all and repeat one after the other…)

1. I am that pure consciousness or self.
2. I can do all things through God who strengthens me.
3. They that wait upon God shall renew their strength.

Repeat this ‘mantra’ mentally till it seeps into your subconscious and it literally replaces the negative thoughts you may have about your problems, just as light always overcomes darkness.

Now, turn to your right side, breathe evenly again, then arise and approach your day believing that you are refreshed and drawing upon that higher power for a depression cure.

Friends, this is very important, that you believe you are healed, just like a child believes the pain felt earlier has been cured by Mom kissing it away. Yes, such a child-like faith is required. Child-like but folks, powerful! It’s been written: “According to your faith be it unto you” (this is a basic law of successful living.)

In addition to this, to co-operate with the Higher Power in healing you, you’ve got to meet this Power halfway. Make efforts to better yourself. Let’s get back to the basics folks, exercise, eating right and positive thinking. In regards to a depression cure, you may have to supplement drawing upon that Higher Power with seeking good company, sources of laughter and a wise avoidance of those factors or people that bring you down.

A depression cure is within reach, the power which has its roots in the Omnipotent and Unseen is right there inside of you. With the tips above, you can draw from it, solve your problems and lead a depression free life.

Empower yourself with a depression cure that works, reconnecting with the spiritual forces around you. Great wonders exist in your mind. Tap into it and win.

Microsoft’s New Search Engine

December 26th, 2008

I tried out Microsoft’s new search engine (beta version) the other day. They have been working on it quite secretly now for almost a year. It has been rumored to be a Google killer once in full public release. They say its accuracy and ability to return relevant results will far surpass any other search engine on the Internet. That remains to be seen. I tried various combinations of single, double, and triple word/phrased searches to inspect the results.

To the casual observer I suppose a certain percentage of the results would seem to be accurate, but upon closer inspection and with a trained eye, the results for the most part ranged from poor to outright terrible.

I then attempted a series of searches on the same combination of words. “custom designed screen printed t-shirts” I was attempting to determine how much the results and rankings changed (or did not change) within the same set of query words. I searched with a variety of spellings on a particular keyword In this case, I selected the word “T shirts” then t-shirts (with a dash) and finally “tshirts” (no dash, all one word)

One web site had very consistent results across all three spelling methods. This intrigued me so I clicked on the link to analyze the site. i.e. Why was this one so well optimized or more specifically why did this new Microsoft beta search engine find this web site so tasty.

The site was completely broken. None of the graphics loaded properly. (in Internet Explorer) It was devoid of any contextual content on the home page and scarcely little throughout the rest of the pages. Some scrolling Java script overlapped the button for a drop down menu. No outside links. Nothing. Excuse the pun but this was not a pretty site. How then could Microsoft possibly rank this site one, two and three for completely different keyword phrasings and spellings on a soon to be major release for a search engine?

The answer revealed itself as soon as I took a look at the web site’s HTML source code.

Guess what folks, meta tags are back! At least as far as the Beta version of Microsoft’s new search engine is concerned, especially the keyword Meta Tag. Above all, this tag seemed to account for the heaviest weight in determining the aforementioned rankings. I will err on the side of caution here and assume that Microsoft has not finalized all their algorithm parameters yet, but the keyword tag was definitely what their spider had been eating.

The problem However, (beside the horrible site) was that this particular keyword tag, by all SEO standards, was an abomination! Nearly every rule and guideline we’ve come to know and love ALL thrown out the window! It looked like a tag from 1995. Multiple repetition. Too many characters, way too many words, broken lines, poorly weighted keywords, bad spacing, and completely useless keywords. What’s a “rinsger” anyway?

Have a look for yourself. Here it is. (Without formatting changes)

KEYWORDS CONTENT=”tshirts, tees, tee shirts, tee-shirts, printed t-shirts, blank t-shirts, eshirts, ishirts, short sleeves, sweatshirts, long sleeve, v-necks, tank tops, jerseys, screenprintings, screen-printings, custom t-shirts, custom designs, custom printing, custom embroidery, michigan, fraternitys, sororitys, sportswear, artwork, typesetting, imprints, engraves, emboss, stamps, pocket ts, ts, rinsger tis, ringers, ladies ts, designs, designing, apparel, clothing, clothes, screens, printers, silkscree embroidery, embroidered, customs, fraternities, sororities, golf, towels, logos, promotional, fundraisers, personalized, company, tailgates, formals, footballs, blocks, carnivals, circus, pledges, bid, day, rush, halloween, christmas, easter, thanksgiving, halloween t-shirts, christmas t-shirts, easter t-shirts, thanksgiving t-shirts, floors, dormitory, churches, clubs, sports, sport teams, choirs, schools, businesses, fundraisers, intramural, hanes, jerseys, fruit of the looms, universities, michigan state university, MSU, msu, university of michigan, U of M, UofM, u of m, eastern michigan university, EMU, emu, western michigan university, WMU, wmu, central michigan university, CMU, cmu, colleges, universitys, universities, shrits, tshrits, t-shrits, desings, te-shirts, teshirts, sirts, shits, shitts, custums, screan”

Yup, pretty darn ugly, but the Microsoft Beta search engine seems to be eating it up. Granted this engine is still in beta version but let’s review. Broken, useless site. Broken useless tags. Number one ranking! What’s wrong with this picture?

Most search engine users will try a new search engine only a few times. When they do not get the search result accuracy and relevance they expect, they will soon dismiss it and move along. Beta version or no beta version, one thing is for certain. The Microsoft coders have plenty of additional work to do before releasing this search engine to the general public. Google coders, take the weekend off.
