Aging and The Mature Dog

May 31st, 2008

Just as with you and I, your pets age is a consideration that must be thought about as your dog matures. It is easy to overlook, especially if your dog is in its prime, however, your aging animal has new needs that must be met just as with any other aging animal or human being.

A change in lifestyle, preventive measures and lots of love can help your dog in its journey from prime time to down time. First, just how old is your dog - really?

Depending on the breed and size, your pet may have a life expectancy from around eight years (for most of the giant breeds) to fourteen or more (for the toy/smaller breeds). Keep in mind that these are only approximations- your pet, depending on its health and quality of life could live longer (or shorter) than these figures. Most dogs fall anywhere between these two.

Additionally, your dog will begin to show signs of aging based on its quality of life, condition of health, size, breed and hereditary considerations. Medium sized dogs, such as spaniels, may begin to show signs of aging around 7 or 8 years of age. Giant breeds may do this as early as 5 or 6 while small/toy breeds may wait around until 9 or so. Again, remember these figures are approximations.

It seems that in many dogs, work is one key to living a long and full life. Most dogs recorded for living long periods of time were working animals- active herding dogs, movie stars/ actors, or involved in other types of mental and physical stimulation. This above all seems to be a key factor in helping your dog live to a point closer to its true life expectancy- and in a way of better and fuller health.

In a mixed breed animal, age is harder to predict, but an active knowledge of their background or size does help in predicting this figure.

Changes in dietary requirements, an understanding of potential diseases and of your dogs potential needs is your best defense in helping your dog in this time of change. Many things may hamper your dog from play or simple day to day activities as it ages. Arthritis is just one example. Also, as with humans, dogs will tire and slow down much faster as they age which leads to one of the most common mistakes people make with their aging pets- OVER FEEDING.

Just how this happens can be quite easy. The pet teaches its human to feed it by begging, looking cute, doing a favorite trick, etc. until the owner gives in. Over time this added caloric intake can take its toll and result in extra weight. This is one of the major areas that can cause health problems as the dog grows older.

To detect if your dog is overweight simply run your hands down the animals sides. If you can easily feel the ribs and there is a degree of tapering near the dogs mid section (just in front of the hind legs) your pet is probably not overweight. If you are unable to feel the ribs and there is to tuck up, chances are your dog is overweight. Your vet can offer you ways to alter your dogs diet if it is too heavy or can answer any other questions you may have concerning your pet and obesity.

Exercise is an invaluable component for any type of weight loss- for animals or humans. Initiate play with your pet. Encourage it to play catch, fetch or whatever games you played with it when it was younger. Even walking your dog can be quite beneficial- for both you and your pet. Remember not to overdo it, however. If your dog begins to pant heavily, allow it to rest. Some animals, like children, dont know when to stop once they begin to play.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR:

If your dog shows any of the following symptoms:

Clouding of the eyes(beware the whitish, hazy discolorations)

OR

New lumps underneath, or on top of, the skin

OR

Troubled breathing/ extensive coughing

OR

Has problems eating hard foods/ bad breath

OR

Shows signs of controlling its urinary capabilities

OR

Has problems of stiffness/ lameness in getting up(especially after sleeping)

IS

Unresponsive to verbal commands or you calling its name

Consult your vet

The benefits of a healthy and fit dog highly outweigh that of an unfit animal. First, the risk of getting heart disease or other health problems such as diabetes, is much lower. Also, with early prevention, many age related health problems can be averted. Consult your vet with any questions or at the first sign of any health problems concerning your animals.

Health Insurance And Insurance Brokers

May 31st, 2008

If you are in the market to purchase your own health insurance coverage you can save yourself precious time and money by shopping and comparing policies right online. Sites dedicated to giving you quotes on various types of insurance make it very easy for you to get an idea of what your coverage and costs will be. However, please be forewarned that there are some pitfalls in using an insurance broker as I discovered within the past year.

As a self employed person, I carry my own health and life insurance for my family. When making the move from New Jersey to North Carolina in 2004 I knew two things about our health insurance:

1. I would have to shop for a health insurance provider covering North Carolina.

2. Rates would be cheaper than in New Jersey, with costs being about half of what I had been paying and with slight better coverage.

Several weeks before we moved I contacted a well known internet insurance broker and received quotes. We selected one company and received the paperwork from the broker about ten days before our move. Quite frankly, I wish I had started the process a little earlier as all of our free time was dedicated toward preparing and making the move. So, I ended up packing the paperwork with my personal stuff and was only able to fill it out and submit it one week after our arrival in North Carolina.

Dealing with the online insurance broker was a simple task, but I soon discovered that they were an extra step in the application process, one that only slowed down our approval.

Once the paperwork was received by the broker, they acknowledged the same via email and mentioned that they would review our package before forwarding it to the health insurance company.

Over the next couple of weeks we received messages from the insurance broker stating the following:

1. We are in the process of reviewing your application.

2. We have sent your application off to the insurance company.

3. The insurance company has your application and will be reviewing it in about one week.

4. The insurance company expects a delay in reviewing your application due to the high volume of applications received.

5. Please do not contact the insurance company directly; we will keep you posted as to the status of your application. Yeah, right.

Originally, we were assured by the insurance broker that the health insurance company would review and approve our application within two weeks. Follow up phone calls by us to the broker along with several exchanges of emails revealed that this was not going to happen. In addition, when we contacted the health insurance company directly - at the encouragement of the broker - the health insurance company had difficulty finding our application. Within a few days the application was found sitting in another department; our contact at the health insurance company blamed the broker for sending the information to the wrong address.

As it turned out, the original insurance quote we received online was off by just over 20%. Once the health insurance company determined that certain pre existing conditions needed to be factored in our rates rose accordingly. Of course, when working with the internet broker we knew that the rate quoted wasn’t ‘absolute’ but the big jump was still a bitter pill to swallow.

Among our thoughts at that point in the process were:

1. Had we known ahead of time that our “final rate” would be so high, we would have shopped around some more.

2. Because of the delays and the passage of time, we needed to complete the application process as our coverage with the NJ health provider would need to be canceled, preferably by the end of the year.

By the middle of December, a full ten weeks after we submitted our paperwork, we received official notification that our application was approved and that we were covered. During the last couple of weeks of the lengthy application process we contacted the health insurance company directly several times to learn what the status of our application was. At no time during the process were we assured that we would receive approval; essentially we were told that coverage would begin pending approval.

In conclusion, I offer the following recommendations for shopping for health insurance:

1. Comparison shop online. Get quotes through the online brokers to get a general idea of what your costs will be. If you have pre-existing conditions, the prices quoted will not be reflected in your quote.

2. Narrow down the list of companies quoted to three and then contact them directly. Bypass the broker as they are an unnecessary additional step in what certainly is not a quick approval process.

3. If you need insurance by a particular date, apply well in advance to allow for delays, for misplaced paperwork, changes in your application, etc. Our insurance coverage was approved effective a specific date, but we were able to move it to another date to coincide with the dropping of our NJ health care provider.

In all, the experience was wearisome at times and a real eye opener. I know you see ads all the time for online insurance quotes. I am not saying to avoid the sites, but please consider what we went through before using an online broker exclusively.

What You Need to Know About Bankruptcy Records

May 31st, 2008

Filing for bankruptcy is a serious decision. Sometimes, when you can no longer make your payments and creditors are applying too much pressure, bankruptcy can be a welcome relief to a hard situation, but it is important to remember that filing bankruptcy leaves a long trail of bankruptcy records.

Your bankruptcy records include a lot of personal information about yourself. They tell people your real name and where you reside. Bankruptcy records also reveal your social security number and all of the credit accounts you owe money to. Bankruptcy records indicate the amount of debt that you defaulted on and whether or not a lien was put on any of your property. Bankruptcy records also list your assets.

Because bankruptcy records contain so much personal information, they are a great place to start when you want to do a background search on an individual or even a company. Perhaps you want to know more about a client you are interested in doing business with. Maybe you want more information about the new boyfriend or girlfriend a family member recently brought home. Possibly you are interested in learning more about the background of the person you are considering hiring at your place of business. A check into the bankruptcy records would provide many answers and vast amounts of information in any of those cases.

Checking the bankruptcy records of an individual or business you are considering partnering with will help you to see a real picture of their financial stability. If they recently declared bankruptcy, they will not be in a position to get credit and that could deter your desire to work with them The bankruptcy records of individuals will show how they dealt with the repayment of debts in the past and that can help you to determine how much of your money you trust them to handle.

Checking the bankruptcy records of an individual can help you to learn not only about their financial means, but about their trustworthiness. If the bankruptcy records of your daughter’s new boyfriend show that he failed to pay off his credit cards and had to declare bankruptcy that might give you a solid look into his character when it comes to faithfulness. Bankruptcy records tell more than numbers. They give you insight into a person’s integrity.

Checking the bankruptcy records of a prospective employee can also tell you a lot about the person you might hire. Are they faithful, diligent, and trustworthy? Their bankruptcy records can offer insight into the morals of the person you want to hire.

If you are interested in checking out the background of an individual or company, a perusal of their bankruptcy records is one of the best places to begin.

Build Monuments to Your Future

May 30th, 2008

On my recent trip to Cambodia I was blessed to spend three days exploring the ruins collectively known as Angkor Wat. We experienced sunrise and sunset, as well as the noonday heat, in this magnificent complex of temples, many built more than 900 years ago.

Relics of Past Splendor

These shrines were created with stones carried from far away; many were built without mortar, and all were built without modern technology. Yet the structures have withstood the ravages not only of time and weather, but also of mankind. Over the centuries temple figures sacred to one religion (Buddhism) have been removed or destroyed by followers of another religion (Hinduism), only to be replaced by the original worshipers (Buddhists). Just as destructive were souvenir hunters who have taken pieces from the carvings and sold them to collectors and museums. Lastly, bullet holes and bomb damage mar many of the temple walls a legacy of the Khmer Rouge.

Like the pyramids in Egypt and the Mayan ruins in Central America, Angkor Wat is the relic of an ancient civilization that was far advanced for its time. Today many of the Angkor Wat temples are still in daily use. I saw monks and worshipers kneeling in the temples, burning incense and praying. Truly a profound experience.

Emblems of Today’s Squalor

In contrast, on my last evening in Cambodia, I took a boat ride through Chong Khneas, a floating fishing village. This loose collection of more than 700 families of fishermen and a complete support community live on boats and travel Tonlé Sap Lake following the fish and the rainy season.

To reach the floating village we drove through the town of Siem Reap and several smaller villages. The further from Siem Reap we traveled, the more primitive living conditions became. Homes went from cinder-block and concrete structures to wooden houses to one-room bamboo shacks supported on spindly bamboo poles to protect them from flooding. I would have been afraid to roll over in my sleep in these houses, much less raise a family or ride out a monsoon in one. Electricity was nonexistent, and the only running water was the stream we were following to the lake. The only nod to the 21st century was televisions, running on car batteries and prominently displayed in the glassless windows.

The floating village consisted of hundreds of boats, some no bigger than 20 feet by 6 feet. Entire families lived on each boat. Cages suspended underneath the boat served as impromptu fish farms. The back of the boat held a primitive outhouse. Children bathed in the lake while old women cleaned fish or cooked noodles in water dipped from the same source. The lake served not only a source of food and of cooking and drinking water, but as a bathtub and septic system as well. Here the ubiquitous televisions, and the outboard motors used to power the fishing boats onto the lake each evening, were the only lifestyle changes in the last 200 years.

The floating village and the bamboo shacks were light years below the standard of living enjoyed by the Cambodians who designed and lived in the temple complex at Angor Wat 900 years ago. All of those past splendors seem lost today.

The Lessons of Forgetfulness

What caused such an advanced civilization to revert to a shadow of its former self? And what lesson can we learn from this study in contrasts? To paraphrase George Santayana’s famous line, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to forget it.” Somehow the people of that floating village have forgotten the grandeur of Cambodia’s past. They have lost touch with the creativity and spirit that made Angkor Wat possible. Instead of moving forward, they either stayed the same or moved backwards and perhaps that amounts to the same thing. Once we cease to learn, build, create and stretch, we not only stop gaining or growing, we allow the rest of the world to pass us by. This is the equivalent of moving backwards.

We must ask ourselves each day, “Am I moving forward or simply standing still?” In our lives and at our work we all know people who refuse to change with the times. To our computer-savvy children watching us struggle to retrieve our email, we may look like slow-moving dinosaurs. We cannot afford the luxury of standing still. To do so allows the world to move past us. More importantly from a business standpoint, it allows our competition to move easily past us.

Do you risk becoming a relic of the past or a dinosaur whose fate is extinction? If you have any amount of doubt coursing through your veins, commit today to education, growth and constant improvement, both personal and professional. And know that if up until now you’ve been a bit lax, you’re never too old or too young to make this commitment to yourself. The lesson I learned in Cambodia is that I want to be the one who builds monuments for the future not the one who wonders how the monuments of the past were built.

Even so, don’t get in a frenzy: there’s several guidelines and things which you really should take in concerning online gambling, in particular if you’re a neophyte regarding this realm.

The very first thing which a sharp-witted internet gambler like you should definitely hunt for is an online gambling Web site of the sort which offers high odds. Determine the online gambling Web site is overseen by a decent certified public accountants company so as to evaluate the specific games’ pay-out percentages routinely. You should always be sure to ensure that the virtual card playing Web site is actually licensed, e.g. by checking the govt. permit as featured on the casino site’s About page. Moreover, another seminal advice could be to place your bets first in insignificant amounts in place of disbursing crazy amounts right from the start. Check first the soundness of this virtual card playing operation before triggering any grave adversity, in particular that of losing your money! The final pointer concerning online betting. Why a Good Mattress is Important for Your Health

May 29th, 2008

Beds are the single most important items of furniture that you can buy for your home largely because you spend so much time in it and it can have such an impact on your life. It is important then that you purchase a bed with a mattress that is good quality and has been designed to support your back, neck and overall body type. Irrespective of whether you need a bed for your health or you just want something to snuggle into, you should always do your homework.

There are different types of beds and mattresses that are available but while the selection is varied, you actually possess a unique sleeping style so you need to find yourself a bed that complements this. So do your homework and find the bed and mattress that is right for you.

Back pain is the number one reason why people often stay home from work because they don’t get a good night sleep and often don’t get the right amount of sleep or get a disrupted sleep. This pain is caused by sleeping on a mattress that is inappropriate for your back and body type. This means you will likely not be getting the support that your back needs causing you to toss and turn all night, as you search for a position that feels comfortable.

Air mattresses and water beds are designed to stop back pain while giving you that night of slumber that relaxes your mind and your body. These kinds of beds provide you with the support that your body needs, no matter which position you like to lie in. Whether you lie on your side or on your back, these mattresses will give you the support that you need. This makes for a great night of sleep and will give you a new lease on life as you wake up refreshed every morning.

If you can’t seem to get a good night sleep in your current bed with your existing mattress than you might want to consider a replacement option. Adjustable air beds, water beds or even just a brand new mattress with inner springs could solve your posture problems. After one night of sleep on a new bed, you will wish you had made the investment sooner.

Shopping for these items over the Internet is probably your best solution when looking for mattresses. Buying mattresses over the Internet will save you both time and money. And don’t fear about secure transactions as these are now more secure than ever before. Find a bedding supplier that sells mattresses and see what deals they offer. Depending on what you spend and how much you buy the supplier might also throw in free shipping and free insurance.

Replacement Sofa Slipcovers Can Instantly Give Your Home A Fresh New Image

May 29th, 2008

Giving you home an instant makeover can be as simple are replacing your sofa slipcovers. The beauty of furniture slipcovers is that they can be changed whenever you feel like a new look. In addition, they are inexpensive to buy and quick and easy to fit. So, if you are a bit bored of the appearance of your tired looking sofa, consider livening up the whole room with a bright new sofa slipcover pattern!

Sofa slip covers come in a huge variety of colors and patterns. Think about the décor in your room to give yourself some ideas of the sort of style that would work well. How about finding a color to match to a favorite painting or floor rug? If you have neutral colored walls and carpet then you may want to inject some energy into the room with a vibrant pattern. It can be a lot of fun using your creative flair to personalize your furniture!

Sofa covers also come in a wide range of different fabrics. These days most ready made slipcovers are fully machine washable, so it is no hassle to keep them clean when necessary. Durable materials such as cotton, velvet or suede are all available from slip cover stores. Think about what texture would compliment your existing furnishings, as well as what would feel nice to sit on. Bear in mind the usage of your sofas and what would be a practical option. For example, if you have pets or small children there’s an increased likelihood of your slipcovers becoming dirty, so it’s worth spending your money on a hardwearing fabric that can withstand being washed regularly.

Styles exist for furniture of all shapes and sizes, including sectional slipcovers. So, no matter what sort of sofa you have, you should be able to find a suitable design. Ready made ones tend to be large and loose fitting, in a “one size fits all” style. They offer a cheaper option than custom slipcovers, which can be made to measure and provide a snug fitting finish.

Whatever your requirements, personal tastes and budget, you should find some fantastic slipcovers to meet your needs and transform your furniture!

Can You Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer?

May 28th, 2008

We hear it all the time…lose weight for your health. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their physical well-being and ultimately their life expectancy.

In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5′10″ weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of “Your Personal Guide to Wellness” notes that while this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.

Just how does obesity shorten our lifespan? The answer to this question is complex, yet there is a clear link between obesity and the development of cancer. An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute involving 750,000 people showed that obesity significantly increased the risk of cancer developing in the following organs: breast, colon, ovaries, uterus, pancreas, kidneys and gallbladder.

Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society (ACS) says one reason obesity may raise cancer risk is because fat cells produce a form of estrogen called estradiol that promotes rapid division of cells, increasing chances of a random genetic error while cells are replicating, which can lead to cancer. In addition, fat centered around the abdomen may increase insulin and insulin-like growth factors in the blood, which may increase cancer risk.

“Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk of breast cancer,” notes Thun, “and obese men have a 40% higher relative risk of colon cancer…. Gallbladder and endometrial cancer risks are five times higher for obese individuals”.There is evidence that cancer rates in developed countries are increasing at 5 to 15 times faster than developing countries. A major contributor to this alarming reality has proven to be diet. In populations where the diet consists mostly of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains - in contrast to the typical Western diet of fatty meats, refined flours, oils and sugars - the risk of cancer is much lower.

The interaction of diet and the development of cancer is an active field of research and Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of “What Color is Your Diet”, says “It appears that diet has its most significant effects after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the growth of that cancer”. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex set of interactions, the typical Western diet that leads to obesity may actually act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells. It is never too late to improve your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate improvement to your health and vitality.

1. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%) qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In 1980, just 15% of Americans were considered obese. You can check your BMI at the website below.

2. Match your diet to your body’s requirements. If you eat and drink more calories than your body requires you will put on weight. Learn to control calories and portion sizes, make recipes leaner, and eat infrequently from fast food restaurants. Also learn how to snack with healthful choices.

3. Color your diet with a large variety of colorful, cancer-fighting fruit and vegetables. There are seven different color ranges of both fruit and vegetables and by choosing between 5 to 9 daily serves from a wide range of fruit and vegetables, we are extending our consumption of cancer (and other disease) fighting nutrients.

4. Eat lean protein with every meal. Protein provides a powerful signal to the brain providing a longer sense of fullness. The right source of protein is essential to controlling your hunger with fewer calories and necessary to maintain your lean muscle mass. Choices of protein should be flavored soy shakes with fruit; the white meat of chicken and turkey, seafood such as shrimps, prawns scallops and lobster and ocean fish or vegetarians may prefer soy based meat substitutes.

5. Rev up your metabolism with activity. If you want to enjoy a lifetime of well-being, exercise is a key ingredient. Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, director of nutrition and physical activity for the American Cancer Society (ACS), says adults should do something for 30 minutes each day that takes as much effort as a brisk walk. Children should be active for an hour each day. We are more likely to develop habits around things we enjoy, so seek activities which you enjoy doing. It is also helpful to build physical activity into your daily routine: use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift at work, park your car in the parking bay furthest from the super marketing and don’t use the remote control to change TV channels.

6. Get support to ensure you develop a healthful eating plan and reach your goal weight. Whilst a small percentage of people possess the discipline to lose weight, many obese people have developed strong thoughts and habits concerning the food they eat. In order to establish new habits, most people respond well to some form of consistent encouragement and coaching. A study, “Effects of Internet Behavioral Counseling on Weight Loss in Adults at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes” shows that participants who had the support of weight loss coaching lost more weight than those who didn’t. The study concluded that the support of a weight loss coach can significantly improve weight loss results.

Being overweight or obese has been identified next to smoking, as the most preventable major risk to developing cancer. Even small weight losses have been shown to have beneficial health effects. So it’s never to late to start and you can never be too young or too old to be concerned about your health and do something about achieving a more healthy weight.

The research on the internet - its past, present and its future.

May 27th, 2008

Before you start writing and designing your term paper, make sure that you know and understand the subject and topic, you are assigned with. It might be simple, yet nevertheless a lot of students experience many difficulties at this stage. Why? Because apparently, it is not as simple as it might look. Even highly experienced and well educated person can spent several hours and in many cases days to come up with some ideas and points on particular topic.

That is why it is highly important to turn to term paper help resources. What kind of resources are these? In our modern world you have access to many databases, electronic libraries and other online sources. Sometimes, it is difficult to find a particular book or journal at the library. Yet, wherever you are - in the rural area or even in some distance country, you will be able to find many useful resources if you are connected to the web. There on the internet, you can find new research on your topic, new articles and messaging boards - vital information that might give you some ideas on the topic, you research. Try to read attentively and impartially in order to understand why this particular topic or subject concerns so many people. Why do they want to discuss it? Why do they argue about it? Once you have used these term paper help resources, you can move on to other stages of the writing of your paper. You may learn more about it here: term paper help

Once you have come up with new ideas and have decided what you are going to investigate, you may start researching. This process is very important for all writing assignments; however I would like to single out two assignments where research is in the forefront of the writing process - research paper on health and research paper on religion.
When you start writing research paper on health, you may use internet extensively as well. There is a lot of information on various health topic, many health departments, organizations schools as well as societies have their web sites. One can find much useful practical information in different medicine journals which are available either free or under subscription. However, one should exercise extreme caution, when you use information from messaging boards or some unknown sites. Do not forget that in this type of the paper you should make sure that your information is relevant and authentic. In many cases internet sites or rather moderator review the information (messages and news) before it is posted. However do not forget that sometimes, though not always this information is reviewed by technical staff of the site rather than by real professional. Certainly, you understand that there are many branches of medicine and in my opinion it is virtually impossible to assign experienced and well-educated professionals in all fields to review the information. That is why one can use this information, but should be very cautious about it. You can learn more about it here
research paper on health

Internet might help you in the designing and completing research papers on religion. However, in this case you should remember that religion is viewed as interdisciplinary subject and you might visit some web sites on other disciplines as well (such as history, geography, psychology). When visiting these sites you should follow the advice given above (for the writing of the research paper on health). Try to follow the instructions of your tutor. When visiting web sites of different religious organizations, try to avoid the web sites that advertise religious intolerance. I can presume that you will not visit these sites, however remember-some of them may be outwardly aggressive, but some of them may promote hatred in surreptitious way. Learn more about it here research paper on religion

And finally, despite the fact that these papers might differ in some methods of the research, one should always follow simple rule- gather information and resources before you start working on your paper. Custom Essay Writing Service

How To Choose A Reliable Web Host For Your Website

just one week in May. I could not help but laugh
because I knew his problem. He had made a wrong
choice of web host.

Your choice of web host can either promote your business
or ruin your business. You have to be very careful
when choosing your web host or you will be consistently
losing up to 80% of your income due to your web
host’s inefficiency.

Here are a few quick tips on how to know which
web host is reliable, affordable and right for your
website.

1. Check if the web host has a web presence. Face it,
if a company claims to be a web host and they don’t
have a functional website of their own, then they
have no business hosting other people’s websites.
Any web host you will use must have a functional
website where you can check for domain availability,
get support and order for their hosting services.

Additionally, you should conduct random checks on
their website. If you visit their site randomly ten
times and the site is not available more than once in
those ten times, forget about that company except you
want your own website too to be unavailable almost
all the time.

2. Any web host you will use must have an appreciable level
of relevant experience. A minimum of a full year of operation.
A new web host will only experiment with your website and
the result may not be good for your business. Visit
the web host’s website and read about them. If they
don’t talk about their experience, then they don’t
have it. Just leave them alone.

3. Look out for their present clients’ testimonials
on their website. Call or email the clients and ask
them questions. If they confirm that the web host is
good, then the company has passed this test. However,
if you don’t even find a single testimonial on their
website, they probably don’t have any satisfied client.
What to do? Just leave them alone.

4. How fast or how well does the company respond to
support emails? You can find out by conducting this
small test. Visit the web host’s website and submit
or email an enquiry to them. If you don’t get a
response in 24 - 48 hours, please run away as fast
as your legs can carry you. Why? When you host
your website with them and you have a problem,
it will take them more than a month to respond to
your support emails or requests.

5. You should not forget to check out their prices.
The prices must be within reasonable limits and
their packages must have the features you desire;
adequate monthly transfer, email addresses,
MySQL databases, CGI bin, FTP access, control
panel etc. Very high prices don’t necessarily
translate into very good services. Don’t be
fooled by high prices. It’s a common trick,
please don’t fall for it.

6. It must be easy and secure to make payments
to your web host. It is not advisable to fill
in your credit card details when making your
payment. You should rather use a web host that
accepts other forms of payment that do not
require you to fill in your credit card details
e.g. paypal and egold. If you are in a country
where you don’t have easy access to credit card
facilities, it is even better to use a web host
that accepts payment in your local currency.
This will ensure that you won’t have any
problems when you want to renew your domain
and your hosting accounts.

7. Use only web hosts that give 24 hour online
access to your account. With that, you have
total control over your domain and your website
and you can change anything including your
name servers (DNS)whenever you want.

8. It is better to use a web host that offers
additional web services such as web design,
website promotion, search engine submission
and website management. They can be of help
to you in future if you have any problems
with your website or you need any additional services.

9. Before you make your payment, read the
terms and conditions of the company carefully.
If you don’t understand or agree with any
of their terms contact them for more explanations.

10. Finally, I know it may be very time consuming
for you to conduct these tests on the hundreds
of web hosts out there before choosing one. I
have therefore taken the pains to analyse
hundreds of them. I recommend two web hosts
that have passed our simple tests. I can put
my reputation on the line and guarantee their
efficiency, reliability and affordability.
